Expert review

Un p'tit truc en plus is a warm and humorous French comedy-drama following a small-time criminal father and son who are forced to blend into a holiday camp for young adults with intellectual disabilities. The overall tone is lighthearted and genuinely touching, with an authentic and respectful portrayal of people with disabilities, but the film is clearly aimed at an adult or older teen audience given its narrative context, occasional crude humor and mature themes. Sensitive elements include some profanity and casual language throughout, a budding romance between the male lead and a female educator, and a storyline involving a jewelry store robbery and police evasion. These elements remain relatively mild in their handling, but the film's nuanced exploration of disability, imposture, and human connection goes well beyond what younger children can meaningfully engage with. Parents watching with curious tweens or teens will find the film a rich springboard for conversations about disability, honesty, and empathy.

Synopsis

To escape the police, a father and his son are forced to find refuge in a summer camp for young adults with mental disabilities, taking on the role of an educator and a boarder. The beginning of troubles and a wonderful human experience that will change them forever.

Difficult scenes

The opening scene shows Paulo and his father La Fraise robbing a jewelry store. Although played for laughs and handled lightly, this scene briefly normalizes criminal behavior and may confuse younger children who are simultaneously asked to root for these characters throughout the film. For a significant portion of the film, Paulo attempts to pass as a person with an intellectual disability in front of the care workers. While the film treats this subject with clear respect and warmth, some scenes involve an imitation of disability that could create confusion in young viewers about how to relate to or behave around people with disabilities. A romantic connection gradually develops between Paulo and Alice, the group's lead educator. It remains implicit and non-explicit, but the romantic subtext and occasional moments of physical closeness require an emotional reading that younger children are not equipped to fully understand. The father character, La Fraise, regularly uses casual and sometimes crude language, with profanity and blunt expressions punctuating his interactions throughout the film. While this language contributes to his comic characterization, it is not suitable for a young audience.
