Expert review

Mummies is a family animated adventure with a light, playful tone, built around visual comedy, chase scenes, and the contrast between an underground mummy world and modern London. The main sensitive elements are a greedy villain, repeated moments of peril, fast paced chases, slapstick crashes, and a somewhat unsettling magical threat involving possible bodily loss for one character. These moments are presented in a highly stylized cartoon way, with no graphic injury and very little lasting distress, and the tension is usually broken quickly by jokes or upbeat action. The mummy setting and references to ancient burial culture may still feel eerie to very young viewers, even though the film is not horror based. For most children, it looks reasonably suitable from about age 6, with age 7 being a more comfortable recommendation for kids who are easily scared by villains, danger, or spooky imagery.

Synopsis

Through a series of unfortunate events, three mummies end up in present-day London and embark on a wacky and hilarious journey in search of an old ring belonging to the Royal Family, stolen by ambitious archaeologist Lord Carnaby.

Difficult scenes

The story begins when a valuable object is stolen by a dishonest archaeologist, which sets off an urgent mission and several dangerous situations. A young child may react to the villain's threatening behavior, even though the movie presents him in a comic adventure style rather than in a truly dark way. Part of the plot depends on a magical threat stated in fairly striking terms, because one character is told he could lose his eyes and tongue if the object is not recovered. That idea may unsettle some children, especially literal minded viewers, even though the film stays visually light and does not show graphic injury. The trip into the human world leads to multiple chase scenes, falls, mishaps, and moments of sudden panic in the streets of London. These sequences are noisy and energetic, with a fast pace that may feel a bit intense for very young children, but they still play like cartoon slapstick rather than realistic danger. The basic imagery of mummies, tombs, and an underground burial themed world may feel odd or spooky to children who are sensitive to skeletons, death related settings, or unusual looking creatures. The overall treatment is colorful, whimsical, and funny, with no sustained horror atmosphere.
