Expert review
This animated feature offers a large scale fantasy adventure in the Pokémon world, with a family friendly tone that is broader and more suspenseful than a typical series episode. The main sensitive elements involve violent storms, spectacular battles between giant creatures, a threatening villain who captures Pokémon, and several situations where the heroes appear to be in real danger at sea or in the air. Everything remains highly stylized, with no blood or graphic injury, yet the tension returns often and some scenes of climate chaos or near drowning may unsettle younger viewers. There is also a very mild romantic thread that stays completely innocent. For most children, parental support can help during the storm sequences and can frame the story as one about restoring balance, bravery, and teamwork rather than pure peril.
Synopsis
When Lawrence III's scheme to capture the Legendary Pokémon Lugia upsets the balance of nature, it is up to Ash Ketchum and his friends to save the world.
Difficult scenes
The film begins with a legendary bird being captured by a collector using a massive flying machine. The scene clearly shows a villain disrupting the natural order for personal ambition, which may upset children who feel strongly attached to Pokémon or are sensitive to animals being trapped. A large part of the story unfolds during severe weather, with strong winds, huge waves, lightning, and dangerous seas. Several characters travel through these storms by boat or become stranded in the middle of the chaos, creating steady suspense even though the overall style remains family adventure. The three legendary birds engage in very large aerial battles filled with energy blasts, loud cries, and destruction around them. There are no graphic injuries, yet the giant scale of the conflict and the idea that the whole world is under threat can be intense for younger viewers. A protective Pokémon tries to stop the conflict and then appears overwhelmed and badly weakened. Without revealing the outcome, this sequence may bring fear or sadness for children who react strongly when a heroic figure seems to fall or vanish into the sea.
