Expert review
Paperman is a black and white romantic short with almost no dialogue, creating a gentle, poetic atmosphere that is broadly accessible to children. Sensitive content is very limited, with no real violence and nothing explicit, though there are a few moments of frustration, a dash through busy traffic, and a brief feeling of loss that could unsettle very sensitive viewers. These moments are mild and short, within a story that stays warm, whimsical, and reassuring from start to finish. An age recommendation of 7 is cautious and reasonable, although many younger children may also handle it comfortably. Parents may simply want to help younger viewers understand the innocent romantic attraction, the older city setting, and the brief tension when the characters lose sight of each other.
Synopsis
An urban office worker finds that paper airplanes are instrumental in meeting a girl in ways he never expected.
Difficult scenes
George spots the young woman in the building across from his office and repeatedly tries to get her attention without success. This string of failures may create a small feeling of frustration or sadness for sensitive children, even though the presentation remains light and playful. At one point, the main character suddenly leaves his office and runs across a busy street while trying to find the young woman again. The scene brings a brief sense of danger related to traffic, but it is not graphic, not realistic enough to be harsh, and no injury is shown.
