Expert review

This animated feature film is based on the popular Japanese isekai franchise 'That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime' and follows its main cast into an underwater adventure involving political intrigue, magic, and stylized action within a colorful dark fantasy setting. Sensitive elements include battles between characters wielding powerful magical abilities, a mysterious and corrupting underwater pollution threatening an entire civilization, and the looming danger of a dormant aquatic deity being forcibly awakened. These action sequences recur regularly throughout the film without being graphic, staying in line with the shōnen manga style of the franchise, featuring spectacular visual effects but no visible blood or traumatically depicted death. Parents of children under ten may find it helpful to watch the film together in order to help contextualize the themes of divine corruption and political conspiracy, which require some familiarity with isekai and Japanese fantasy genre conventions.

Synopsis

After concluding the opening ceremony of the Demon Kingdom Federation Tempest, Rimuru and his companions are invited by the Celestial Emperor Hermesia of the great elven nation – the Magi Dynasty Salion – to visit her private resort island. As the group enjoys their brief vacation, a mysterious woman named Yura appears. A new incident unfolds against the backdrop of the boundless azure sea.

Difficult scenes

The mysterious pollution of the Azure Sea is depicted as a dark and corrupting force devastating the marine environment and threatening the people of Kaien. The imagery of this tainted ocean and the creatures affected by it may be unsettling for children who are sensitive to themes of environmental destruction or corrupted nature. The priestess Yura arrives in a state of urgent distress, with her people on the verge of extinction due to the corruption and a conspiracy aimed at forcibly awakening an ancient aquatic deity. This dynamic of a people in danger and religious manipulation may be difficult for younger children to grasp or process emotionally. Underwater battle sequences between the Tempest characters and the antagonists involve large-scale magical power displays with spectacular visual explosions and credible peril for several main characters, delivered in the intense register characteristic of this franchise.
