Dogs in Space is a Russian-Ukrainian animated film inspired by the real Soviet canine cosmonauts Belka and Strelka, set in a colorful universe blending space adventure, underwater odyssey and animal comedy. The story features several potentially stressful situations for young viewers, including a capture by pirate jellyfish, a crash-landing of the spacecraft in the ocean, and the discovery of an alien facility threatening to drain all of Earth's oceans. These events unfold at a brisk pace and the extraterrestrial antagonist, though ultimately non-violent, creates tension tied to the fate of the entire planet. Humor and teamwork regularly ease the tension, but certain sequences of collective danger or confrontation may startle very young children; parents of children under 6 may find it helpful to reassure them about the happy resolution and the whimsical nature of these situations.
Synopsis
In the not-so-distant future, genetically enhanced dogs are sent across the universe in search of a new home for the human race. It’s a giant cosmic game of fetch, as the canines seek a planet that will save humanity and - more importantly - let them return to their beloved owners.
Difficult scenes
Belka and Strelka, the two canine cosmonauts, are captured and held prisoner aboard a ship controlled by pirate jellyfish. The captivity scene, though stylized, may worry younger children who have grown attached to the heroines and see them powerless against clearly hostile antagonists. The spacecraft crash-lands in the Caribbean Sea following a trajectory incident. Even though the scene is handled lightheartedly, it places the main characters in immediate danger and may create brief tension in children who are sensitive to accident or disaster situations. Lenny and Cricket are mugged and robbed by thug parrots at the airport. Although the scene is played for comedy, it depicts a clear physical assault and may catch young children off guard, particularly those unaccustomed to seeing main characters physically mistreated. The group is dragged underwater by a maelstrom and discovers a giant alien facility draining the planet's oceans to feed an extraterrestrial pet. The atmosphere of this sequence is distinctly tense, featuring a confined setting, a planetary-scale threat and unknown creatures, which may leave an impression on children under 6.
