Expert review

This animated short by Hayao Miyazaki follows a young puppy who slips out of his home and explores the town from an animal's point of view, with a lively, gentle and curious atmosphere. Sensitive content is very mild and mostly comes from the brief separation from his young owner, the feeling of being lost, and a few moments involving streets and traffic that may cause light worry for very young viewers. The intensity stays low throughout, with no real violence, no coarse language and no adult material, and the direction quickly restores a sense of safety after each small moment of tension. For most children, the film is suitable from preschool age, though it will usually hold attention better around age 4, when a child can follow a short adventure built around wandering and searching. Parents only need minimal support, mainly by reassuring sensitive viewers that Koro is exploring a new world, that he is not being harmed, and that the story is designed to delight more than to scare.

Synopsis

The film is about Koro the puppy, who runs away from his mistress, experiences some adventures around town and who is finally happily returned home.

Difficult scenes

The main sensitive moment comes when Koro gets out of the house after the little girl leaves for school. A young child may feel mild worry because of the separation and because the puppy is suddenly alone in an unfamiliar environment. Several scenes place Koro in the middle of town, with bicycles, streets and movement around him that can create a sense of small-scale danger. The presentation remains light and child friendly, with no shown injury and no long or overwhelming suspense.
