Expert review

This live action adaptation keeps a light, family adventure tone, with playful fantasy built around a magical crayon that brings drawings to life. The main sensitive elements come from a few danger scenes, a police pursuit, a manipulative villain, and a sad section involving disappearance and the confirmed death of an important figure in Harold's life. The film stays stylized and non graphic, but some confrontations and imprisonment scenes may unsettle younger children, especially because they involve separation, loss, and the fear of characters fading away. The tension is occasional rather than sustained, and the story regularly returns to humor, wonder, and teamwork. For children around 6 or 7, watching with a parent can help frame the fantasy peril, and also open a simple conversation about grief, jealousy, and how characters cope with big feelings.

Synopsis

Inside of his book, adventurous Harold can make anything come to life simply by drawing it. After he grows up and draws himself off the book's pages and into the physical world, Harold finds he has a lot to learn about real life.

Difficult scenes

Early in the real world adventure, Harold and his companion are suddenly hit by a car. The scene is not graphic and is handled in a family friendly way, but the impact may startle young children because of the abrupt danger, the noise, and the confusion that follows. In an important part of the story, Harold learns that the person he has been searching for cannot be found because he has died. Harold's grief also causes his drawings to fade away, which adds a very concrete fear of loss for children who are attached to the characters and may lead to questions about death and absence. Later, a jealous man takes advantage of Harold's trust, steals the magical crayon, and traps him, then also threatens another child. This sequence is built around betrayal, captivity, and a villain who is more forceful than truly terrifying, which can still be upsetting for sensitive viewers even within the film's playful style. The climax includes a more energetic confrontation over the crayon, with imagined creations becoming hazardous and the setting turning into lava. There are no detailed injuries, but the combination of pursuit, struggle over the magical object, and visual threat may feel intense for very young children.
