Expert review

This animated fantasy series follows a clan of gargoyles awakened after a thousand years, with a superhero style mixed with a darker gothic mood than many family cartoons. The main sensitive elements are frequent fights, threats from human and supernatural enemies, a tragic backstory involving betrayal and the destruction of the clan, and a somber atmosphere in which the heroes are feared and rejected. The action stays stylized and not graphic, yet the tension is fairly regular across the story, with imposing creatures, falls, weapons, and repeated references to death that may unsettle younger children. For most kids, the series is better suited from about age 8, and more likely to truly hold their interest from about age 9, especially if an adult is available to reassure them that the danger remains within a heroic fantasy frame and to talk about prejudice, loyalty, and fear of difference.

Synopsis

In Scotland, 994 A.D. Goliath and his clan of gargoyles defend a medieval castle. In present day, David Xanatos buys the castle and moves it to New York City. When the castle is attacked the gargoyles are awakened from a 1000 year curse.

Difficult scenes

The medieval opening presents the destruction of the clan in a context of betrayal and revenge. The presentation remains animated and not gory, yet the idea that nearly all of Goliath's companions were killed can feel heavy for a young child, especially because this loss shapes the entire series. Many episodes rely on nighttime battles across the rooftops of Manhattan, with chases, falls from great heights, weapons, explosions, and monstrous or robotic enemies. The violence is stylized, but the repeated danger and the imposing appearance of the gargoyles may be unsettling for children who are sensitive to suspense or dark imagery. The gargoyles' awakening in the modern world comes with an atmosphere of distrust, because humans often see them as monsters. This social hostility can affect emotional children, since the heroes are trying to protect the city while facing rejection, fear, and misunderstanding.
