Expert review
Dee & Friends in Oz is a musical animated series produced for Netflix and designed for a preschool audience, offering a gentle and colorful retelling of the classic Wizard of Oz story. Sensitive elements are very minimal: some antagonist characters may appear slightly intimidating at first, and the main character goes through brief moments of tension as she navigates an unfamiliar world. These moments are quickly resolved through music and friendship, and never build into a lasting anxious atmosphere. Parents can watch this series with full confidence alongside their little ones, using the songs and positive values as a springboard for conversations about friendship and self-confidence.
Synopsis
When a mysterious key transports her to the land of Oz, a regular kid named Dee goes on a musical journey to save magic — and be the hero of the story.
Difficult scenes
Dee finds herself transported to an unknown world away from her loved ones, which may briefly unsettle very sensitive children who are particularly affected by themes of family separation, even though the situation is quickly framed as an exciting adventure rather than a real danger. Some characters with a mildly threatening appearance show up to oppose Dee and her friends, but their menacing quality remains very subdued and calibrated for a preschool audience, without any intense confrontation scene.
