Expert review

This Japanese animated science fiction film follows a high school boy drawn into a story of love, time intervention, and virtual reality, with beautiful imagery but a far more demanding tone than a young children's cartoon. The sensitive material mainly involves physical danger, fear of losing someone, a lightning related accident, unsettling pursuers, and several scenes where the city itself seems to break apart in confusing and alarming ways. The presentation is stylized and not graphic, with no explicit sexual content and almost no harsh language, yet the emotional stakes are high and the threat of death or permanent loss is central to the plot. The film also relies on abstract ideas and rapid plot turns, which can make younger viewers feel unsettled even when nothing graphic is shown. Parents should know that this is best suited to older children or young teens who can handle suspense and discuss themes such as coma, grief, sacrifice, and simulated reality afterward.

Difficult scenes

A key part of the story revolves around a lightning accident that leaves a girl in a life threatening condition. The scene is not graphic, but the idea that a loved character could fall into a coma may be upsetting for sensitive children. In several sequences, fox like humanoid entities appear to chase the main characters and force reality back into place. Their sudden arrival, large numbers, and threatening purpose can be frightening, especially when the environment shifts around the characters. The main boy faces emotionally heavy choices, including the fear of losing the person he loves and the feeling of being used by his older self. This psychological pressure is a major part of the film and may be harder for younger viewers than the action scenes. As the story progresses, the city begins to malfunction, the sky turns ominous, and parts of the world seem to be erased. These sequences are visually striking and may unsettle children who are disturbed by disaster imagery or disorientation.
