Expert review
Babar and Father Christmas is a 1986 animated television film based on the Babar series, aimed at very young children and set in a warm, festive Christmas atmosphere. The story follows Babar on a long journey to find Santa Claus and invite him to include elephant country on his gift-giving tour, a simple and wholesome quest centered on generosity and family togetherness. Sensitive elements are virtually absent, the broader Babar series context involves the loss of Babar's mother but this special focuses entirely on the cheerful holiday adventure without frightening scenes or violence. Parents can confidently share this film with children from age 3 onwards, and may wish to stay nearby to answer any questions from the youngest viewers about long journeys or the excitement of waiting for Christmas gifts.
Synopsis
After writing to Santa, Arthur, Pom, Flora and Alexander carefully monitor the mailbox, but in vain. Finding their excellent idea of wanting to bring Santa home, Babar sets out on a long journey to find him and convince him to include elephant country on his gift giving tour.
Difficult scenes
The broader Babar series context implies that Babar lost his mother as a young elephant, and a sensitive child familiar with other episodes might make that connection: however, in this Christmas special this background element remains entirely in the background and creates no dramatic tension or distressing scene within the film itself.
