Expert review

Asterix & Obelix: The Middle Kingdom is a family adventure comedy with a burlesque and spectacular tone, carried by an all-star French cast and epic settings spanning from Gaul to ancient China. The film features large-scale stylized and cartoonish brawls, a political plot involving a treacherous prince who imprisons the empress, and a few light romantic undertones between various characters. These elements are handled in a comedic register and never truly dramatic, with action sequences choreographed in the classic slapstick tradition of the franchise, free from graphic violence or depicted suffering. Parents of children under 7 can reassure younger viewers about the fate of captured characters, as the film maintains an overall cheerful and reassuring tone throughout.

Synopsis

Gallic heroes and forever friends Asterix and Obelix journey to China to help Princess Sa See save the Empress and her land from a nefarious prince.

Difficult scenes

Several large-scale battle sequences pit the Gauls against Caesar's soldiers and Chinese troops. The fights are choreographed in a slapstick fashion, with soldiers sent flying and widespread brawling, but with no visible injuries or blood. Obelix in particular strings together blows comically thanks to the magic potion. These scenes may startle very young children due to their visual and sonic intensity, though the tone remains consistently tongue-in-cheek. The Empress of China is captured and imprisoned by the rogue prince Deng Tsin Qin early in the film. The captivity of a maternal figure may worry sensitive children, even though the treatment remains narratively distanced and is never shown in a frightening or violent way. Several scenes revolve around a romantic rivalry between Asterix and Graindemais over Princess Fu Yi, featuring jealousy and comedic confrontations. These light romantic moments remain innocent but introduce adult social codes that very young children may not fully grasp.
